In my installation practice I use the concept of series' in spaces to address awareness of dimensionality as it pertains to physical areas and human personalities. Dialogues created between multiple sculptures or structures encourage the viewer to consider how each piece works as a whole, and in turn, how it can be considered as a complete body and a series of experiences.
I use often materials that are provisional by nature to further this concept. By using media the viewer can find in their own lives, such as found plastic, untreated wood, and “scrap” paper, I offer a relational entry point. Exposed fastening mechanisms, such as glue and nails, in conjunction with the untreated materials, deconstructs typical notions of beauty and harmony and encourages one to consider a contrary perspective. Controlled light is also something I consider when working. It can recast the viewer's perceptions regarding the apparent weight or density of the structures I make, by casting multitudes of shadows or enhancing a given material's transparency or opaqueness. Altering the way a certain material is perceived can allow it to function in numerous roles as an indicator. |
